A reflection on 1 John 5:5-13 for Friday after Epiphany: John proclaims three enduring witnesses—the Spirit, the water, and the blood—that testify to Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the source of victory over the world and eternal life.

Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and the Spirit is truth. So there are three that testify, the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord. If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater. Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life.

I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God.

Beyond the Whirlwind: Contemplating the Threefold Witness

Immersed in the whirlwind of fleeting sensations and impressions, people in our fast-moving world may find the words of the apostle John difficult to fathom. Writing at a time when followers of Christ wrestled with the truth of his incarnation, John’s emphasis on Jesus’ historical birth, baptism, and death (“water and blood”) proved his full humanity. In a theistic climate, especially in the early Christian community, the “testimony of God” held authority in the minds of the faithful. John’s logic seamlessly moves the listener from the veracity of “human testimony” to divine testimony in a single leap. In our post-Kantian times, most readers may find his logic less compelling due to widespread skepticism in our human ability to transcend reason and empirical knowledge.

Yet, entering into John’s world, we may ask, why is the Spirit’s testimony important? Unlike created, finite, human testimony, which cannot bear witness to history-transcending acts, the Spirit possesses the very mind of God “at the beginning” (Genesis 1:1; John 1:1). The words of Scripture, inspired by the Spirit, testify that Christ, “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8), stands at the crux of time and history. All events before and after Christ’s crucifixion bend around this event, which transcends all space and time. Thus, Christ told his brethren, “Before Abraham came to be, I AM” (John 8:58). Creation is cruciform, with Christ’s union with humanity (“water and blood”) flowing horizontally across time, and his union with the Father and the Holy Spirit pulling the cosmos vertically to eternal deification.

Our liturgical readings invite us to silence our hearts to listen to the voice of the Spirit within, asking for discernment and penetration into eternal truths.

A Song of the Three Witnesses

The Spirit, water, and blood—
Three witnesses to the Son
Incarnate, who gave his life
to restore creation.

Born and baptized in the wombs
Of a Virgin and the Earth,
Christ united the cosmos
To God of infinite worth—

A plan foreknown from before
The foundation of the world,
With the Lamb at the crux,
Slain as history unfurled.

As courts and judges accept
Human testimony, hearts
Listen to the voice of God
Whispering in the vineyards.

The Spirit of truth convicts
Souls to believe in the Son,
Who came by water and blood
To deify us as one.
