A reflection on Isaiah 9:5(6)
Christmas Mass During the Night
©️2022 by Gloria M. Chang
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us;
Isaiah 9:5(6)
upon his shoulder dominion rests.
They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero,
Father-Forever, Prince of Peace.
Prince of Shalom
Into the darkness and disorder of the fallen world, Isaiah proclaims the birth of a child who will govern with divine wisdom. “Upon his shoulder dominion rests.” Christ, our Prince of Peace (Shalom), breaks down the wall of hostility between tribes and nations. In him, Jews and Gentiles reconcile and become “one new person in place of the two” (Ephesians 2:14-15).
Let us rejoice, for the Son of God, who became the Son of Mary, has come to heal the human race, restoring us to wholeness and communion.
For unto us a Child is born,
unto us a Son is given!

King of peace,
Break down the hostility among us.
Heal wounds that hurt,
Fill our hearts with hope,
Emmanuel, you are truly with us.
As you were in the stable,
Born among animal dirt,
Your powerful love will endure.
Could we ask for anything more?
You bring heaven to earth.
Love came down from heaven to earth, alleluia!
