The Baptism of the Lord (Year B)
A reflection on Mark 1:7-11

This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Mark 1:7-11

Christ and Adam
I, the Lord of heaven and earth,
Send you the Son of my Womb,
Conceived in a Virgin’s womb,
To renew the face of the earth.
Descending to earth, my Spirit,
Like a dove, unveils my Son:
Beloved Adam, my son
Formed by my breath in the Spirit.

Christ the Firstborn
Through Christ, humankind is written at the heart of the Trinity. The incarnation of Christ happened after the creation of human beings, but the perfect Adam remains anterior to the Adam of Eden. As the “first born,” the Son was before the face of God before anything was created. “In effect,” Nicolas Cabasilas emphasizes, “it is not the old man who has served as the model for the new, but the new Adam who rather served as a model for the old…For the one who had before his eyes all creatures before they existed, our ancestor is nothing but the imitation of the new Adam. He was created in the likeness and in the image of the latter.”
