Friday of the Fourth Week of Easter

John 14:1-6

Facing his impending death, Jesus comforted his disciples, saying, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me.”

Was Jesus’ equality with God not yet grasped in these words that distinguished himself from the Almighty?

An alternative translation reads, “Believe in God; believe also in me.” Pisteuete (believe) can be read in either the indicative or imperative moods.

Mysterious references to his Father and the dwelling places he will prepare for them did not clear up the fog.

Thomas asked straightforwardly, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?”

Earthly categories of space and place impede spiritual insight. Jesus did not give a three-dimensional response.

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

The Way is a Person whose very identity is “to” or “toward” another—God the Father. As Jesus repeated many times in the Gospel of St. John, “I am in the Father, and the Father is in me.”
