The Ten Thousand Things
The Chinese Bible translates Logos (Word) in the Prologue of St. John’s Gospel as Tao (literally, the Way)—the universal and transcendent guiding principle in the cosmos. The “ten thousand things” point to everything that exists.
The great Tao flows everywhere, both to the left and to the right.
Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching, chapter 34
The ten thousand things depend upon it; it holds nothing back.
It fulfills its purpose silently and makes no claim.
Translated by Gia-Fu Feng and Jane English
Ten thousand things say, “Amen!”
In Ireland you’d hear “Céad míle fáilte” which means a hundred thousand welcomes in Irish Gaelic.
