Isaiah 45, Day 1

“Isaiah 45, Day 1”
Isaiah 45:8a

Let justice descend, you heavens, like dew from above,
like gentle rain let the clouds drop it down.

Isaiah 45:8a

Rorate Caeli

One of the most beautiful Advent hymns of the Catholic Church, “Rorate caeli” (Drop down, ye heavens), comes from Isaiah 45:8 in the Latin Vulgate:

Latin:

Rorate caeli desuper et nubes pluant justum aperiatur terra et germinet salvatorem et justitia oriatur simul ego Dominus creavi eum.

English:

Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the just: let the earth be opened, and bud forth a savior: and let justice spring up together: I the Lord have created him.

Both the words and musical composition fittingly express the deep yearning of the patriarchs and prophets for the coming of the Messiah.
