Jar of Light

“Jar of Light”
A reflection on Mark 9:2-10

Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them.

As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.

Mark 9:2-10

Deathless Divinity

Beneath the clay of human flesh, Christ hid the radiance of his divinity from the eyes of all who beheld him. But on the Mount of Transfiguration, the Father acknowledged his beloved, eternally-begotten Son, whose shining splendor bedazzled and overwhelmed Peter, James, and John.

Jesus warned his three disciples not to speak of the vision to anyone before he had risen from the dead. For the Messiah, revealed in the Transfiguration as “God from God, Light from Light,” had to undergo a bloody scourging and crucifixion before restoring humanity to its full glory.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

2 Corinthians 4:7

Light spilled from the jar before it shattered,
Revealing the Christ who would be battered.

Traditional Chinese Translation

《光之罐》
在罐子破碎之前,光芒從罐子裡溢出,
啟示將被毆打的基督。

  1. Beneath the human flesh of clay,
Christ hid the radiance of his divinity,
from the eyes of all who beheld him,
on the mount of Transfiguration Day.

    In his compassionate mercy,
    with his favorite three,
they received a glimpse of glory,
    holding the vision secretly.

    Future sufferings they would bear:
    rejection, chains and death.
Christ’s glory vision in their hearts,
    sustained them during evil’s snare.

    1. Thank you for your reflection, Ellen! Peter’s testimony captures the enduring power of the vision:

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.
