Taming the Wild

“Taming the Wild”
A reflection on Mark 1:12-13
First Sunday of Lent (Year B)

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.

Mark 1:12-13

Paradise Restored

Christ, the second Adam, in a confrontation reminiscent of the temptation in the Garden of Eden, restores human nature through his steadfast union with the Father’s will. Fasting and praying for forty days, Jesus resisted the lure to use his power to feed himself, to test God, and to worship Satan (Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13).

At the exile, God cast Adam and Eve, clothed in garments of skin, out into the wild, appointing cherubim to guard the way to the tree of life. By contrast, wild beasts surrounded Christ the Victor without harming him, and angels ministered to him. In Christ, the Son of Mary, paradise is restored.

Into the desert the Spirit led
The Son of God to crush the serpent’s head.

聖靈帶領進入曠野

  1. Into the desert he was led
    Rough talk, serious threats,
    Trying him day and night.
    Enduring such trauma,
    He escaped the wild beasts.
    Angels ministered to him.

Into my wasteland I am led,
    Tempting treats, lazy bones,
    Chain me, distort my sight.
    Begging for mercy,
I hope to escape the taunts,
Asking for light on what is dim.
