Isaiah 11:6b
©️2020 Gloria M. Chang
In the peaceable kingdom, a little child leads lion and lamb, restoring Eden’s glory to humankind.
The calf and the young lion shall browse together,
Isaiah 11:6b
with a little child to guide them.
The Peaceable Kingdom
On the mountain of the Lord, adam (humankind) will reclaim their role as caretakers of the Garden of Eden. Entrusted with “dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that crawl on the earth” (Genesis 1:28), the little child rules as a priest-king. With the “son of man” crowned at the center, the Psalmist exults at the beauty and majesty of the divine order:
O Lord, our Lord,
Psalm 8
how awesome is your name through all the earth!
I will sing of your majesty above the heavens
with the mouths of babes and infants.
You have established a bulwark against your foes,
to silence enemy and avenger.
When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and stars that you set in place—
What is man that you are mindful of him,
and a son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him little less than a god,
crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him rule over the works of your hands,
put all things at his feet:
All sheep and oxen,
even the beasts of the field,
The birds of the air, the fish of the sea,
and whatever swims the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Lord,
how awesome is your name through all the earth!
The sign of Emmanuel, the Infant King, and his Virgin Mother, mark the beginning of the restoration of all things in Christ (Isaiah 7:14).
